How can I manke my attic stairs nicer?

I have those typical attic stairs that pull down from the ceiling, anything I can do to make that part of the ceiling a bit nicer?

I did away with that ugly string by putting a lovely glass door knob on it instead.
I say paint the stairs in ombré blues. Then paint clouds in opposing ombré fashion. As if it were a walk in the clouds instead of a hot attic.
Linda and Hope I like both your ideas. However I think I would take it a step further and hang decorations from the steps on ropes so that when pulled down to go into the attic they would swivel and hang down the back of the ladder. Or maybe even use it for storing extra throws that will take the pressure of walking on them to go up the ladder.
