You can always use some sort of clay - that works for most ages.
Also, if you make ceramic shapes with holes to hold the candles and then glue them onto a block of wood with E6000 (and paint the wood first).

The simplest DIY menorah is to attach 8 washers to whatever your base is ( could be a block of wood, could be clay shaped as you wish and stick the candles into the washers

Hi, B.J. ~ here's one you can make with metal washers and stone fragments! You can get pieces of marble & granite for free or very cheap at places that make custom kitchen & bath countertops. Have fun! Happy Hanukkah!
