Hi! There are so many options - very exciting! Do you have a preferred material? Or method? Or anything goes?
I agree with Cori - so many options and they depend on your budget, style, and DIY skills. You can use tile, wood, metal, and wall paper. Here's a link to 7 different ideas for DIY back splashes: http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/rooms-and-spaces/kitchen/7-budget-backsplash-projects-pictures

A friend of mine, on a very tight budget, found some really cool wallpaper that looks like marble tiles. It's peel and stick so it can be removed easily without damaging your walls. It really looks nice.
I had yellow tiled backsplash UGLY went to Lowes they had a double sided sticky foam [ I which I saw on HGTV] bought tiles that were on sale. I washed the old tiles and let them air dry . This sticky foam is very sticky and once placed it's hard to move. Your ruler and scissors are your best friend. Do a small area first. After the sticky is up place your tiles pressing them in place well. Don't forget to cut out for the electric outlets. I think women are better at this, men tend to over think something that's really easy. I sent mine to home depot cause he'll be there forever, A 12ft area took me < an hour. a small 3ft area took US > 2 hrs. due to an electric outlet. Go figure!! Al in all the whole kitchen backsplash was done in 4 hours. This was done about one year ago and nothing has fallen or become loose. OH the counter was repainted to. this takes about 1 hour but has to dry for 4 days. this too is still without marks or scratches . Total cost $80.00 depending on the cost of the tiles you choose.
