Hello. Does anyone know what is the best type of hibiscus to grow in South Texas? (Gulf Coast, near Houston). Are there any varieties that are native to us? I love the plant but have never had much success, but my neighbors hibiscus are over 1o feet! icon

What type of Hibiscus did you plant. Most are hardy with proper planting ,watering and full sun....

As you will have to go buy them anyway, go to a local nursery and ask, they know how to grow plants, KMart only knows how to ring them up. Bring snapshots of the spot you want to plant them, maybe even a soil sample.

I would say try the "hardy hibiscus". That what grows (without care) in my yard in Tennessee.

Hello Amy, I live in Lake Jackson. Most Hibiscus grow very well in our area. They have to have FULL SUN at least 6 hours a day and good watering. I also use a fertilizer with insecticide in it as the leaves tend to get aphids and or white flies. Very soon all the Houston Garden Centers will have lots of Hibiscus to choose from. The only place that can give you excellent and correct advice is Maas Nursery in Seabrook. TX. If you have not been there you are in for a big treat. They have a horticulturist on duty most of the time.
