I watched a recent hgtv episode of fix it or sell it (something like that) the wifes complaint about the current house was the stairs. The designer promised new steps but ran out of money and painted them and changed out the railing and posts for considerably less money. They looked at other houses but in the end the designer won them over with the final outcome which was smashing
Worth a look for ideas.
You can put stair treads on them that come in different colors.
I agree with rug treads. They take it to the next level. A nice hand rail to match your decor also. I love a painted hand rail that matches the trim used in house. If those trims are a light "wood color" I would paint a handrail white or cream, which ever works with your wall colors.
Paint the risers white and stain the treads. An ebony stain on the treads and handrail would be beautiful.
