You can use fabric paint instead of dye. www.ehow.com/how_7892811_paint-oriental-rugs.html
If it truly is a Persian rug, it would be almost blasphemous to change the color. Please just put it away, well wrapped in plastic to avoid moths. You may find that you're ready to use it in a few years, perhaps in a different room that highlight its beautiful colors.
It is a treasure.
Keep in mind, too, that it's difficult enough to dye a lightweight t-shirt evenly. A rug with ten or more gallons of water soaking it would be almost impossible to maneuver, let alone dye and dry properly.
There are so many interesting, fun and relatively inexpensive rugs out there. You will find exactly what you want for your new look. With no chance of bleeding.
you cannot just dye a heavy rug. any textile that is dyed will have excess dye that needs to be rinsed many times and then dried. I agree with the previous comment. put it away and buy a new rug.
A Persian carpet is worth lots of money. Sell it , buy the colours you want and have money left over!
