good morning
does anyone have any good idea to keep a room like this rustic but update the wall without taking off the paneling?

Honest opinion. It can't! Unless you gut it ( no pun )

I'm not into dead animals on the wall, and there is no picture. My guess would be to distress paint the paneling. I don't know the color scheme, so maybe a distressed whitewash or gray. You might get ideas of rustic farmhouse from HGTV Fixer Upper. Good Luck!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I'd try to help. But can not view any picture! Sorry ..maybe, move the taxidermy heads to a set or series of pallets & change them out, do a ship lap white wash wall freshen up the space. So hard to help when I have no idea what is looks like.. we have a reindeer head ( silvery chrome ceramic never real) we put a green wreath around & include it in our fun Christmas decor. I put a horn, paper tiara & streamers on him for New Years.fun lightens things up!

Thanks for your comments. I do like the white wash idea but not sure how to do it on a dark paneled walls. The paneling from like the 70's the house my husbands parents built. I have painted joining rooms gray and trimmed out with crown molding and trim looks good but wasnt sure on this room.

We live in the Gr8 state of Pure MI!

Don't know how many mount you have and if they are on placks but a new trend is to frame them. Hang a large frame around your mount.

your oh so lucky that you are able to do something with your paneling , my husband loves the paneling in our family room and I was told that I can do whatever I want with the rest of the house but do not touch that paneling !! good luck with your project , wish I was in your shoes
