Don't use the fireplace! There could be a fire danger and potential loss of your home. Have a chimney sweep do an inspection. From a concerned Fire Chief
Either you have a blocked chimney with leaves, twigs or other debris. Or you could possibly have loose brick mortar. Hope for the first.
Get a chimney sweep to come out and do an inspection and cleaning. It cost us less than $120 in NE Florid to have it done. Ours had not been done in over 10 years (since before we moved in!) and the peace of mind was well worth it. Turns out that our chimney (circa 1939) was in great shape, just crud had built up.
