I faced the same situation when I was preparing to sell my house. After comparing costs, I learned it was much less expensive to have the cabinet frames laminated and buy new doors. The new look was beautiful and helped the house to sell in one week!
We bought a hud house that we planned to live in for our retirement and when it came to the kitchen, we talked about replacing the cabinets. However, we realized the neighborhood was not such if we ever sold, we would ever get our money out of our investment. We painted the cabinets and upgraded the hardware. 4 years later the market took off. Our house doubled in value which
allowed us to sell and buy a better home so it really depends on your circumstances.
Trying to remove the fronts and finding doors that fit may pose a problem. Washing them down with TSP, Removing the doors and hardware, lightly sanding to remove any shine, priming with a good primer, and painting would be the cheapest way to go. Use a foam roller and foam brush to get a smooth finish.
Thanks for the replies. We have the money to fully replace the cabinets. Just curious if one was cheaper than the other. The current ones are oak with a deep wood grain so it would be a lot of work to fill them and paint since I would like a cream color.
Refacing is generally much cheaper and a faster process than starting from scratch. Just depends upon what what you want to do.
But when you say refacing do you also mean the frame?
Personally if money is no object then I would replace the cabinets instead of spending money to paint them.Long term it will be cost effective.
If they are solid wood cabinets, hands down keep them. They will never fall apart from the weight of what they hold. Newer cabinets made from Plessis wood or mdb will. Replacing doors and fronts are easy and cost effective.
