Can I get a washer and dryer?

No, The other residents did not get permission, and i think the other residents got sick and tired of having dirty clothes just like me they just went and got a washer/dryer without the landlord knowing!

That could be a problem. Could be a violation of the lease if the ban is listed in it. If the septic system gets overloaded, it could be cause for evictions. You could take a chance as they did, but be aware of the consequences.

Donna Rayfield: All the Septic Tanks are the same size where we live, someone suggested that i could get a washer/ dryer that is stacked together that hooks up to the kitchen sink, than when the wash is complete put them into the dryer to dry. Please Respond back ASAP! Thanks!

Where are you going to vent the dryer? In a house it is vented outside. You do not want the dryer to just blow wet air inside your apartment. Yes if it is in your lease it is grounds for eviction. An electric dryer has a special plug and is a 220 not 110. Potential fire issues. How would you feel if you caused a fire and killed other residents or lost all of your belongings. A gas dryer only has a 110 plug but you need a gas line connection available. Additionally you can be sued for damages. Garnishment of wages and credit rating issues. You moved in knowing that you could not have one so any way you look at it, you are in the wrong if you do it, which is exactly what a judge would say.

Also how do you know that all of the septic tanks and leachfields are the same size. And even if they are the same size distribution or the number of units that the one that you are connected to may have more units connected to it.

Sue Kiene: When we moved in 3 years ago the landlord told us all the units are the same size, and everybody has there own septic tank and leachfield and the septic tanks and leachfields are all the same size.

If that is true then the septic should be able to handle the load. Septic tank size is based on the number of bedrooms not washers. Apartments with each one having their own system is not cost effective to build. Very strange. There are washers that are powered by manpower 9 found in fancy camping supply outlets) and the old clothes line works well most of the time.

I can understand that the units might all be the same size but I have an extremely difficult time seeing why a landlord would tell you that and also that they would be discussing the septic and leachfield with a potentioal tenant. Additionally individual apartments would not have their own septic and leachfield unless they are individual houses not apartments. And finally the system while it may have been sufficient in size and code for the number of units connected to it when they were built, they may not be sufficient now due to size, etc. As examples, used to be people washed clothes once a week. And most people did not take 1 or 2 showers/baths each on a daily basis. The landlord thru experience with issues with the septic systems etc. has made a rule of no washers and dryers. He cannot control the number of showers you take, he cannot control how much water you use washing the dishes but he can control the amount of water being dumped into the system by his rule of no washers and dryers. Again, you knew before you moved in that you could not have a washer and dryer and need to abide by it.

the size of the septic is not the issue...the number of apt units that are connected to the septic is....why don't you go back and speak in greater detail with the landlord and see is they are willing to work with you on this issue...you did move in knowing that the unit did not have washer/dryer hook up.....
