How can I finish my countertop?

Sadly I hired , who was supposed to be a reputable company , to redo /paint/repair my bedroom and bathroom vanity . After paying them as 95% of work was done, I never saw them again. I am now left with just a double sink cabinet only in the Master Bath.....no sinks /granite counter top or faucets.
Any idea what I can use to substitute the granite or buy cheap replacement ? I can deal with the sinks and faucet but the granite I am sure would be probably around $1500 ! Any ideas ? Thank you so much.

  • First hire an attorney to go after the crook contractors. Next, never pay until the job is complete to your satisfaction. That being said, I would check with all the local stone yards in your area. Sometimes they have fantastic scrap pieces that would work, for a fraction of the cost. They may also have suggestions for you too. Keep us posted! I am so sorry this happened to you.

My heart hurts when his stuff happens to people. I agree with Naomie! You can also check with your village hall and see if they can advise you. You can file a complaint with the police, just to have a record of the scam. Keep a record of calls, text, emails you have with the company. You can sue the company in small claims court if the charges were $5000 or less. I hope you had a contract with the company. You could check for a Habitat for Humanity store in your area. Any second hand architectural salvage shops, When I was a remodeler, I charged people 35% of the full price to start the job and a final payment when the job was done. Please keep in touch. I hope you DO go after the scum.

We took out measurements to Home Depot and had a solid surface vanity top made with two sink holes for about $700.

You can sue in small claims for up to $10k now. I just sued someone and won,.

When a friend of mine built her house she used granite remnants in her children's bathrooms because she was flexible about the colors. Maybe this could be a possibility for you? Also, perhaps a small retailer would give you a break on price if you tell them what happened with the lousy contractors. People like to be a hero. Good luck And I'm so sorry this happened to you!

Well , first I would like to thank you for your suggestions. I have been researching and visiting various granite sites. Because of all of you , I also got the nerve to take these guys to small claims court. I am getting all my notes and pictures together and hopefully will be able to file first of the week !! We all give each other suggestions and ideas but sometimes you just never know whose life you are going to touch along the way .

Thank you again and I will let you all know how I did !!!

Granite even marble slabs that people ordered and changed mind or they may even have a piece that was left form a job. They may cut sink holes as well as faucet since hard to work with and can Crack if you don't know how to do it on these natural stones. Good luck in court and don't contact them have them served so that you know they will not disappear. Hey karma is a (you know what) so it will catch up with them and they will always have to answer to God.

when i deal with contractors that I'm not sure of-and they demand full payment up front, i tell them "you get half to pay for supplies, and the rest when completed to my satisfaction." the chimney removal peeps weren't happy, but i stuck to my guns. if they want the job they will do what i asked. never ever give all the mula in 1 chunk up front.

never give the final payment until all inspections are passed, and all work completed to *_your_* satisfaction/ as well as the state or county inspector.. the boss may be a st. shooter, but some by the day labor may not be. Yeah... I can be a real @hole. do have them served for theft of or diversion of funds. don't forget the contract part when dealing with remodel companies, other services- some will say oh this is on good faith.. get it in writing - every detail. every expectation. who is purchasing the stove and fridge? you or contractor? who cleans up the site? who is doing the plumbing? get all phone numbers/ addresses for the sub contractors.

AND keep the copy of the contract and sub contractors and make sure if it is a carbon copy that it is legible. better yet take the original and scan to computer - make a few copies. stash at least one in the fie safe box or lock box at the bank. sticky fingers won't find it. it wont magically disappear. yup. i grew up on the "wrong" side of town. and yes, contractor types have tried to "play" me. that didn't get very far.

Another good idea is get in touch with a local Habitat for Humanity. Explain what happened and they may be able to help you. Having a great organization like them behind you may resolve the situation quicker. They also may have the material you need to finish the job and help with installation.
