Any latex wall paint will work. Lightly sand to remove any shine. Prime with KILZ, BIN, or Zinsser primer. Then paint with you color. If the paneling has grooves, you can cover them with drywall patching compound and sand before painting.
Another way to brighten up the paneling would be a whitewash look.
I LOVED my paneling after it was painted leaving the grooves. I washed it with tsp, rinsed, primed and painted with latex paint.
