Can you mix wood tones (cabinets, floor and trim)? We want to update our floors and kitchen counter tops and banister but everything is in honey oak wood tones. We are wondering where to start and stop?

Sure, it's your home. I jumped in I have a cherry room a pine room a brand new hickory kitchen cabinets with a superlight finish so the grain shows. I have a new distressed expresso hickory floor from entrance to kitchen and family room and a very light carpet in LR &DR. I have a granite laminate counter tops many neutral colors. I love it. I love wood and natural so grain shows. All my trim is shaker style and glossy white. So to answer your question, start by picking counter then I think you'll get inspired to pick floor color and you can't do trim before floor so that should be next can match floor or be any color but I feel it has to be in the rooms that at least connect to kitchen then carry that color to banister. That is why most people pick white to carry around because it is a neutral. Remember in decorating there are rules but these people who made them don't live with you. Unless you are getting a natural counter top the laminate will be the least expensive item floors are costly. I understand your fear, but faith and fear can't live in you,so trust yourself. Don't live or worry about what people will think unless they are paying for it,and that's what you tell them if they make a comment. You should smile every time you look at it and know you are happy with your choice. Life is way too short, live in the day. To be way too honest I figured this out at 51,so many wasted years of living uncomfortable with neutrals when I love color. I had my LR & DR painted organic green with white trim and baton board in DR and chair rail in LR. I smile in that room. I didn't ask for opinions I had it done my way. It was so liberating. The kitchen was a joint effort I picked style and finish hubby picked wood. I picked counters he picked floors. I love it and if you know wood hickory is opposite of maple. Has high range of grain and wood tones that can scare you to death if you have light finish like mine, where maple is so smooth not much grain. I'm sorry I don't know where maple came from oak has beautiful grain and since light many choices. Oh well I hope you trust your gut and live outside the box.

If too much wood meets it is often helpful to break it up with some painted wood on the risers, rails, baseboards, moldings, accent lines.

General rule I like to follow is if cabinets are while or light the floor should be much darker. The opposites apply, ie: dark cabinets light floor. Shades are what you like but if you go with cherry color cabinets the shades can be close with white counter tops. I recommend quartz. Hardware should be simple in any case.
