How can I stain this fireplace?

I have a 1970s brick fireplace wall that reaches from the floor to a vaulted ceiling with a raised hearth for seating. It extends to the corner of the next wall which is the start of window. The colors are ok but darken the room. As of now when you sit in this room you are facing a wall of brick that somewhat matches the mardi gras tiled floor in the kitchen. The room has beautiful hardwood floors. I would like to warm the fireplace wall up a bit using a little inspiration from about three of the colors in the brick. I heard about staining but cannot find any pics to give ideas to approach this. Need help!

Nadina, I know this will seem a bit strange but I know the fireplace style which your speaking of even though I'm from Florida. My Grandmother had a double brick fireplace in her home- 1 side for the livingroom, 1 side the dining room. Her home was built in 1958. I don't ever recall us staining that home - which unfortunately was sold in 1979. Geez, how my brother and I wish we had it back. I know we kept the house with soft gray walls and a medium gray carpet but then there weren't the colors we have now.

You can white wash the brick using a dry brush technique. Just water down latex paint with a 50/50 mix of paint and water. Load the brush, remove excess paint, and lightly brush the brick. it is such a huge project...i thought of whitewashing too...you are getting on ladder that tall....? careful...i would try to make it pop as you don`t see these anymore...you could alwayes paint it white cream or beige...what a job...
