I order a replacement door handle in stainless to make my plain white stove look more retro, and I think that would work for a black stove as well.
Have fun with it, this is one of my favorite oven makeovers! http://www.hometalk.com/diy/paint/furniture/give-your-white-stove-a-touch-of-vintage-10614343?date=20151030
Go retro, shabby chic, whatever you'd like, tap into your style - we often think that we can't do anything with our appliances. They are what they are. Think again You can make it your own just like any other part of your home. Enjoy!
I can't wait to see what you decide!
Give Your White Stove a Touch of Vintage
use some gold leaf paint to accent it
I'm so lost what is a black smooth top if not where you actually place pots to cook? Are you looking for something to cover this on a gas stove like in the old days? If you put something directly on a cook top regardless of gas or infrared or electric it will get damaged by heat. I would get a piece of granite or marble where you can at least use to roll dough out are put something on it a ccokbook stand but it just seems like a waste of mony. If this is your house maybe you need to change the back splash in something outside the box. I would play with wood since tile and grouting are a pain. Maybe a splash of color on wall as long as it is in a washable finish that can add a real statement. If an apartment you can't alter it without written permission. So if that's the case just keep some fresh potty herbs or flowers in a pretty vase.
You didn't mention what your kitchen theme was. Maybe sit a beautiful pot to go with your decor.
