I'd use a plastic net bag, like the kind potatoes, oranges come in and wash them, in batches in the dishwasher., spread out as the netting will allow in the top rack. Then, take them out before the dry cycle and shake off extra water (loud, let the kids do it outside!)..
I put non-electrical Lego parts in zippered lingerie bags and toss them in my washer machine along with detergent and a couple of old towels. Not much water left after the spin cycle, and they always come out shiny clean. I pour them out onto a towel & roll them up, then unroll them and they're ready to go..
