Wasted Space Above Cabinets

I have a vaulted ceiling in my kitchen, therefore I have an area above my cabinets that is about 4' x 2' x 34" high that is wasted space (see pictures). I would like to do something to utilize the space to store my bulky appliances like my roaster, bread machine and fryer etc. I have cleared out the space so I'm ready for ideas . I don't want to just set them on top for all to see.
Any suggestions, HELP?

You could buy another cabinet to go on top. Alternatively you could build a box and make slider doors. These plastic guides can be glued to the top and bottom, and then you can make the doors out of MDF, frosted plexiglass, formica...almost anything. You can add hardware or drill a finger hole. https://www.knapeandvogt.com/plastic-track-gu... https://www.amazon.com/Knape-Vogt-P2417TAN72-...

I agree with B. Enne! I have never seen so much space above kitchen cabinets. You definitely have the room to add extra cabinets for storing items that aren't used often.

There are some inexpensive storage boxes out there which would look good (matched or mismatched)! Or decorate some cardboard boxes to store your items (cheaper alternative)!

Find boxes, large and small, that you can cover with nice material to have a flow all the away across. You can continue this theme across your frig to put small appliances in. The material can be put on the boxes with any kind of glue but I prefer a lot of Elmer's glue. Then wrap it like a gift box. Just no top!

Photocopy paper boxes are a great size, and come with a lid to keep the dust out.

Put open shelves up there - so much wasted space!

I wish I had that space. My kitchen cabinets have what they call fur downs which enclose the area and I cannot use that area for storage. You are lucky to have that area to use as storage. Hope you find some really nice boxes or baskets. You could cover your own boxes. There are many on Pinterest to try.

I am a little late to this discussion but that rarely stops me from adding my two cents ! If I had your space, I would use a combination of shelves and boxes. The shelves could be for decorative or displayable items, and the boxes to disguise some of the more utilitarian pieces. Some items may be display worthy just as they are. A sign that says "kiss the cook" or "bon appetit" might be used to lean up against something you wish to hide. Using boxes with a color theme will give some visual clarity. Think about adding a plant to soften the space. Ivy often does well indoors.

I use pretty baskets up there to hold (clean) bottles & cans to be recycled for deposit. When it's time to cash 'em in, just grab the basket & take it with you to the grocery store for cents off your bill. Then, use the basket as a container for your groceries!

I was thinking a cabinet with stained glass in it. They have the glass that has texture and different colors in it. That would look nice and festive. Also another idea would be to have a two door cabinet and attach different size ( or shape) picture frames to them and put like one lady said, kiss the cook, or other little sayings in them.

We have the same problem. We have 4 copper tubs and 4 wicker baskets - from Target. Here is a picture. We use them for bulky items and attach small chalk strips for lables. Good luck.

Jenny, do you get to Denver, particularly Aurora? There's a place called Bud's Warehouse that has new and used home supplies--they have cabinets, etc that may work for your project. I would take a single cabinet and lay it in its side, with the hinges of the cabinet pointing towards the ceiling, and the door would lift up. You could get hinges like used for a toy box so you could "park" your appliances. Paint the cabinet in a coordinating color of the kitchen, or stencil on the door for interest, since you have that space. Other places to look for old cabinets would be Habitat Re-Store, thrift stores, even watching for people in the area doing kitchen renos. You can also find inexpensive cabinets at Lowes and Home Depot. Good luck with your project!

As it turns out, I have an in at our local lumber yard so I can check with them to see if they have any OOPS cabinets. Thanks for your suggestions.

My sister used beautiful baskets and a few ceramic kitchen things (teapot, vase ect...) then bought a couple leafy, flowery garlands to weave around everything to take up the empty spots. Beautiful. Sorry no photo

I have baskets and vases, but never really get up there to utilize what I've put in those baskets..but it's fun to check once in awhile. So, I have some used (some beat up) musical instruments on my shelves and over a hutch. You may have to do a little searching, but I found the instruments at yard sales, thrift shops, and "junk' stores. Since they are high enough, one can't decipher how beat up they are, and they are quite unique. You can paint them too!

Store above not a good idea. Too difficult to reach. BUT, most everyone collects some type of knicknack. Display there . Colorful. Cheerful. Can change with the seasons or holidays. Dusting is a minor issue.

The one thing you have to remember about putting things up high is that steam, fat etc will also collect on them. I hate having to wash the space above the cupboards and all the things that are there for decoration. The artificial plants really pick up the dust and fat in the air from cooking.

I like to line the tops of my kitchen cabinets with newspaper before putting things up there. To clean, just remove the paper and replace it. Saves time and energy (and your cabinets). Airborne fats mixed with household dust land there. If you want an example, think of the crud that accumulates on the top of the fan ridge over the stove. Also, if you have new cabinets, take the time to seal the top edges and the tops of the doors so this crud doesn't seep into the wood. Over time you can actually see how the wood has absorbed it...a grunge line across the tops. Old tips from an old-timer who got them from someone even older.

I have similar space above my cabinets although not that much. I store some of my Christmas stuff up there - wrapping paper, decorations, advent wreath, etc. I have some knick knacks there as well. Mine's hard to reach so I don't store anything I would need to use often. This post gives me some incentive to make mine look prettier and more pulled together.

I have the same problem, only mine look much worse...need a total facelift since I can't afford to replace them. Do you have wasted space in your corner cabinets? Mine are simply boxes that can't be reached into unless you have 8ft arms that can weave around like an octopus. I can't see any way to fix this other than to rip them out and try to build the cabinets myself.
