About 1/3 cup
1 Tbsp for light loads. 1 1/2 Tbsp for medium loads and 2 Tbsp for heavy or badly soiled clothes.
When I first started doing my own I used the scoop you get with Oxyclean it took about 5 to 8 washing's to get rid of the store bought soap. I use vinegar and water (about 3-1 mixture) for my rinse and I make my own bleach . Now I use about 1 TBSP of soap per load and for my whites maybe a little more. I also soak the whites for about an hour or so which really helps.
Just had my 4year old front load washer repaired at considerable expense. The repairman told me that I should use a Maximum of 2tablespoons of detergent, No matter how dirty. If filthy, use ammonia first. Extra rinse.
Just to confirm what Shirley and Papoose said. Use white vinegar as softener.
