I have the same bathroom. It was the poly paneled shower surround. It is now a classy subway tile with gray geometric accent. The double hung window in the shower is now a fixed glass vinyl window. I also installed oil rubbed bronze hardware and fixtures, painted the walls a light beige and a dark gel stain on the vanity. Found a very classy mirror and replaced faucets on vanity and tub. This was not the cheapest project but the hodge podge of materials made it look dowdy.
At the very least one could change out hardware so everything matches and refinish the vanity and paint the walls a neutral tone. Color in the shower curtain, towels and rug will brighten it up significantly.

Ten Tips for A Small Bathroom Remodel
Small Bathroom Makeover
thanks ,i looked thru all and the tips for a small bathroom remodel may be the best way to go for me,
Post pictures of your bathroom.
Remove the fiberglass tub/shower combo and replace with subway tile. The tile isn't that expensive but installing it (and doing it correctly with the proper backer board) is crucial. If you can't afford to do this, consider purchasing a high-end fabric shower curtain in an extra long length or make your own. Going from floor to ceiling with the shower curtain is a classy look.
Changing out your fixtures and door handles will help modernize the space as well. Change out the vanity mirror if it's dated as well.
If you need more storage, you could purchase an over-the-toilet cabinet like this one - http://www.target.com/p/wood-space-saver-etagere-threshold/-/A-50373627
Add a pretty rug in front of the vanity that coordinate with your shower curtain and new towels will pull everything together.
