How to cover a curtain rod on a bay window?

I am renting this house and there is a fancy curtain rod, the ones that you pull a cord to open and shut your curtains. I did not want to get curtains made for this and left the rod of the wall, its about one foot higher than the bay window. I only have sheers covering the glass with a special rod for bay windows. I was wondering how to hang a valance on the rod in order to make it look more beautiful.

How do I drape a long valance over a curtain rod?
I looked at this, made the pocket style curtain in the middle, slid it over card board to keep it "stiff" and slid that over the rod. Easy sew, top and bottom seam. And I love mine.
A cardboard box can be cut up to make a "U" shaped cover that slips right over the rod. Get a length of molding from HD (1/2" x 3") to staple to the back - it will strengthen it, balance it and, needs be, keep assembled boxes together if you have to use more than one. . Paint if you like, then simply cover with your fabric, stapling, making valence as long as you like.
I asked my local furniture store to save me a couple of mirror or tv boxes.
