Beadboard bathroom update- advice please!

We are planning to update our almond fiberglass shower/tub circa 1980 by having it refinished white. We want to take out the bulk head and finish the space with PVC wainscoat/beadboard. I have searched to see if anyone has done this to see what it would look like but have not found anything. So, I'm wondering how it would look? Thoughts?

Are you doing your ceiling with MDF? it will not hold up to the spray of the shower. If you are taking out your bulk head and raising your ceiling with green board, that will work.

oops, I meant PVC wainscoat/beadboard.... as for the ceiling, we were going to use zissners mold killing primer with a gloss topcoat

Wainscot works best in powder rooms. If you use thin boards with battens on the cracks you should keep it low on the walls. The moisture from a shower will probably cause it to buckle and warp eventually if it is close to the ceiling. Beware.

I agree with Dee. Green board, which is moisture resistant, for the ceiling. Don't use MDF beadboard in the bathroom. MDF absorbs moisture and swells. Use wood or hardboard.

Having gone through two bath remodeling jobs you can only use the moisture proof sheet rock. No thing will withstand the moisture.

    oops, I meant PVC.

    PVC! Great choice!

I still think this will look more authentic if you put it on the lower part of the wall with a chair rail. Sorry, I missed the PVC originally, thought you were using wood product.

i use Martha Stewarts bead board wallpaper in bathrooms or where ever. It looks and feels like the real thing, it's cheaper and i get many remarks on how real it looks.Everybody that sees it is amazed.Washable and paintable.

We used bead board wallpaper in our bathroom, too. It still looks new and has been up for several years.

Thanks for sharing. I am not a fan of wallpaper...especially in a bathroom what with all the steam and all.

We put PVC beadboard in our bathroom about 5 years ago on the bottom. Painted on top. Still looks great. We did 2" tiles above the shower enclosure.

PVC , people! It's plastic!!! Like white pvc pipe sometimes used under sinks. Moisture is not going to hurt pvc.

Exactly. What I'm curious about is what it would the breadboard look like in the space above the tub enclosure where the bulkhead after we take it down. I've only seen tile done in that area.

I too have bead board wallpaper in my bathroom. I was going to buy it in panel form, but it wouldn't be very suitable in the steamy atmosphere of a bathroom. I painted mine with good quality paint and I've no problems at all with it. It's easy to wipe clean. I would not normally be a big fan of wallpaper but this really is a good solution.
