If the walls are load bearing, do not touch them. If the walls are not load bearing, look for anything on the wall that would need to be moved. Electrical outlets and switches. Cut a hole in the wall, use a flashlight and a mirror to see if any plumbing pipes that would need to be rerouted. When you start, remove the drywall/wall panels from both sides of the wall down to the studs. Then start removing the studs. Keep the demo area clean at all times. Wear gloves, eye protection, and dust mask.
I use to have a bonus room and one of the bedrooms next to each other. I knocked down the wall, but secured the structure by placing a 6" beam across the wall. My husband now enjoys this room as his music room with his drums.
