Chalk paint is really easy to use paint that requires much less prep, minimal to no sanding and gives a nice distressed finish look. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/entryway/table/painting-with-chalk-paint-527096?expand_all_questions=1

Painting with Chalk Paint
Chalk paint has many forms, home made, some newer store lines and Annie Sloan. For me, I have used others but prefer and continue to use Annie Sloan. This line is sold only by approved Stockists and if you don' t have one in your area you can order online. ( I am not a seller of the product)
Chalk paint ( Annie) rarely requires prep other than making sure your piece is clean. It will adhere to almost any surface, I have used on old wood, new wood, slick pressed wood, my front door, metal......etc. Her line is premixed so every can always matches the color of the can you had before. I use it because I can count on it, I love the color line, it can be mixed for many more colors. A good source for exploring the color and mixing is The Purple Painted Lady.
AS paint is low odor, safe, dries very fast and expensive. Coverage is very good in two coats with the exception of a few colors. It is thick and can be thinned with water, because of the thickness it shows brush marks and can be used for texture, giving pieces character and age. It must be sealed with wax or poly and with wax those textures help to grab the wax and give it a unique look. Waxes come in a few options like clear, brown, black , I highly recommend you watch some videos to be sure you feel comfortable and learn the tricks of dark wax. A little goes a very very long way!! ( and a clear wax should be added first)
Although this answer is long I can assure you chalk paint is very easy to use and many options are available, but for me and the 100s of pieces I paint for my business, you can't go wrong with AS brand. Good luck.
