What kind of flooring and what do you want to replace it with. Photo would help.

If it's glued down vinyl or linoleum, a hairdryer will loosen the glue better than anything I've found. Then there is a liquid glue remover to take the stuck on glue up. I used Henry Easy Release Adhesive Remover. I think I got it at Home Depot.
A hand held floor scraper with a blade. It will remove the vinyl and most of the glue
The hair dryer will work but it would be really slow compared to a heat gun which is not that exspensive and has a lot of uses.
