Hi Elisa, I had similar troubles when making one of those globes- try using as many staples as possible ( in each direction) But also, if your staples aren't working still, try switching staplers. I originally tried with a dollar store stapler and it didn't cut it.
A friend of mine also had success using hot glue instead. It took a little bit longer but was much more stable.

I used both Aleene's craft glue and a stapler. It was just enough to keep it looking fabulous
We use a pointed soldering gun. Just push threw to make a little hole where the cups come together. It will melt the two cups together and make a nice bond. I also use it to put holes in the bottoms of each cup to put the light threw. This looks a lot nicer than staples every where.
punch holes in the cups and use paper brad clips...I have had mine for years!
