It is latex paint that is thick and has a chalk-like texture. When you make it homemade you add plaster of paris to flat latex paint. The texture allows you to paint things with little of no sanding or priming. I use it all of the time on furniture and love it. I make my own or buy it at Walmart - they carry a Waverly brand in the craft department that is great - a little goes a long way too and you can add water.
You're going to love it, it makes every painting project so much easier!!
It is a trendy flat paint that most people seal with wax - I fear however that once the phase/trend passes, there will be a lot of ruined antiques. And you do have to strip and sand before chalk painting the final product comes out blahh! I have seen s many pieces that when you get close to them you can see all the "past flaws" This may help: http://canarystreetcrafts.com/when-to-prep-before-chalk-paint/
I do this a lot. I use calcium carbonate and regular latex paint {I tend to use satin or eggshell rather than flat paint}much cheaper than annie sloan or the premade ones does exactly the same thing. And you do not have to sand or strip the old finish off this paint is amazing. There are many recipes out there but the one I found simply is smoother and nicer than the plaster of paris or some of the others.{experiment chose the one you like best}
I would like to paint part of a wall for the great grandkids to have fun with and the word "chalk paint" got my attention. Would this be something I am looking for? Like a chalk board.
