in a rack, alphabetical. amazon has spice racks that will hang from a wall, i used 2 racks and hid them behind the kitchen door. if you are handy, you can make a spice rack from a shallow desk drawer.

I installed a small shelf over my sink and I love it, everything is right in front of me and it adds a nice touch to the room as well. It doubles as decor.

I have racks installed inside my upper kitchen cabinet doors. In my baking area, I keep things like cinnamon, vanilla, etc. In the cooking area, I keep the rest of my spices. I purchased same-sized bottles and re-fill them from the bulk food area at my local grocery or from my herb garden. It's cheaper than buying ready packaged spices, and the same-size bottles fit nicely together on the racks. I make labels which includes the name of the spice and the date purchased, then store them in alphabetical order for ease of usage. When a container gets empty, I remove the label and run the container through the dishwasher. I make a new label with the current purchase date, so I know my spices are fresh.
I had Hubby install a partial shelf (3") in the kitchen cupboard. I have small spice containers on it, and larger ones slip in underneath on their side.
I have a corner cabinet with a lazy susan 2 to be exact. I place them by food the go into. So Italian has oregano, basil, rosemary, Spanish has adobo, tumeric cumin, coriander and so forth on the top level I have salt, pepper you get the point, anyway that's how I do it I also put food away like this so I can quickly see what I need. Saves me time.
I have an entire cabinet dedicated to my spices. All of them are decanted into small same sized mason jelly jars with handwritten labels. They stack nicely, look good, and keep the spices nice and fresh since they seal well. These are what I used:

I separate mine into project, like canning needs, and then into spices for certain foods, like pies, and cooking on Thanksgiving. This may help also.
