After removing old carpet and padding from the floor of a fixer upper house we bought, we want to remove stains without sanding right now if possible .
If there is any space behind the tiles or edges that aren't flush on the wall, you can try to cut into the glue with a 6" putty knife with a wiggling motion. Another way is to use some picture hanging wire, heavy gauge fishing line, or dental floss and saw through the glue. Make sure you wear gloves and eye protection.
You can also try chipping them off with a paint scraper, sounds like its going to require some elbow grease depending on how long the tiles have been up and the intensity of the glue. Good luck, you'll be great!!
If you want to re-surface, I'd just "skin" the wall with 1/8" drywall. How big is the surface?
