As overwhelming as it seems start one room at a time. Make save piles and discard piles. Once that room is done proceed to the next and so on. Move your keep items to one room clearly marked.Once decisions are made regarding the discard piles decide what will make the most profit for you to sell. Items you feel will be a waste of time for you to try to sell bring to good will.
If you go the yard sale route, use the junk boxes and piles of no-low when someone buys the real stuff, use them as bonus free pick giveaways.

5 Easy Steps to Downsize
That will be a great start.
First speak with your tax accountant ours told us that it's a waste of time and that since you can donate and itemize since you own home then just make a list of all items and order the booklet that irs has so that you get the value of that item which is usually more then if you have a garage sale.
To be brutally honest; once you put something in storage, if you haven't been into the storage area since you pack it, just sell the entire room of stuff at once -you probably won't miss it
As to your home; room by room is the best and start making piles -keep pile, garbage pile, sell pile and donate pile. Pick up each item and just put it in the first pile you believe it belongs in, don't get caught up on each item (you can always change your mind later)
Get rid of the garbage first -gives you room to move , then as quickly as you can (make gut decisions) go through the keep pile; everything in it should bring you joy or else it gets moved to the sell or donate pile
Get rid of the donate pile and store the sell pile until you have done all your rooms.
Once ready for your yard sale, organize (kitchen stuff, electrical componants, furniture, toys, etc) and clean your items (if needed). My rule for pricing yard sale items is generally 10% of the original price, advertise your sale and put up signs. My last sale saw 300 people and I made $800+ :)
All the best :) don't let the size of the job get you down, just slog away at it and you'll be done in no time
