I need help repairing a very old table

Found a very old table badly damaged feet of table. Someone tried using a glue that hardened like egg whites. The repair is very bad. I've restored a lot of furniture. However, I want to keep this as what it originally looked like. The top is in great shape.

Do I use some type of chemical solvent to remove the glue which I think could damage it further? Would another option be to saw between the cracks and sand the old glue?

I have a stain from Varathane which will match the finish almost exactly. After the pieces are separated I know how to fix the breaks. I might also have to wood putty some areas.

I have a piece that is very similar to this one. I sanded down the top and stained the piece. I'm planning on using these two as end tables. I love old furniture.

Thanks for any help.

It looks more like an epoxy than a glue. It's probably set too long for paint thinner, but that's worth a try; It might loosen the sections. Otherwise, try an epoxy solvent (from your Lumber Yard). Sawing the pieces apart would be a very last resort. Good Luck ! Brenda C., Alba, TX

I'm with Butch.....it looks like gorilla glue. I've taken a small razor blade and cut or scraped it off very carefully. I haven't tried it yet, but wonder if you heating it with a hair dryer first would make things easier.

Yeah! It's Gorilla glue. Polyurethane based, expands as it dries. I despise it. Saw into the breaks and scrape the glue off. Repair and reglue with real wood glue. Acetone might be the only thing to remove the glue. You can try nail polish remover.

Yes, it's gorilla glue ... Try razor knife carefully cutting off the excess or a small chisel if you have enough room to work with a chisel.... Then sand the wood to get out any scrapes.

That glue is strong, it will hold just needs to be cleaned off as it swells and before it hardens. Acetone for cleanup...

Not a razor knife for this -- need something much stiffer.

Why don't you try a dreamer to round out and clean up

the epoxy then touch it up with a color like the table?

Agree w/those that hate gorilla glue -- no clue why anyone would use it anywhere.

Gouge it out entirely -- likely will need short stiff knife, patience and considerable care so you don't cut yourself -- and start over w/wood filler intended for the task.

Not sure acetone or even gasoline would remove gorilla glue and they'd likely damage the rest of the finish or potentially even the wood.

Chisel it out. That is your best option. It will not harm the wood.I would be gentle though!
