Repairing sheetrock that was covered with wallpaper

Sherrie on Dec 17, 2013Debbie gave you the right advice! You need a trowel for spreading out the mud, in thin coats. Then a screen sander. You do thin coats let dry. Sand. But you keep doing the coats until it is smooth. If there had been sizing underneath the wall paper it wouldn't have pulled off the sheet rock.Helpful Reply

Steve on Jul 31, 2015Do not use compound first! Once the outer layer of paper is removed so is you're vapor barrier. The brown paper underneath will bubble up and loosen from the gypsum wallboard when wet by compound. The first step is to seal the paper with an acrylic primer/sealer and then compound as much as you like. I worked as a carpenter for 43 years and I know of where I speak.Helpful Reply
