Not just deer but bunnies, feral cats. I too want to get my veggie garden in this Spring too. Got a layer of used coffee grounds on the gardens. One of the bunnies must had too much used coffee grounds, got sick in yard. Also need to find a long enough board to go bottom of double gate and just the single front gate so bunnies cannot get in. Also some lattice between my property and neighbours to put a board too. They are eating my lawns up.
Used Bamboo sticks cut to 4 foot size as posts. Made an extra one to make gate. Used roll of (small holes) chicken wire. Threaded posts thru wire then hammered in with a rubber mallet about a foot into ground. To make gate, left about 3 feet of space between corner of building and fence portion. Threaded wire on to two pieces of bamboo. Hammered one into ground by about a foot like the other posts. The last piece, tied a string onto last post making a loop, close gate and loop onto last piece of fence post. No bunnies, kitty cats, dogs or other in the garden. The only thing we were not able to keep out were the moles, and voles which live underground.
I see where rabbits are lodging, underneath church living space. Deer don't see much, haven't raided my bird feeders and no coons, squirrels or ground voles.
I used red pepper flakes to get rid of rabbits eating my flowers, my sister used the same thing for deer eating her hostas. Also anything peppermint or spearamint will get rid of moles/voles.
I live in a city that is overun with deer. I mean driving down the road to the university one day I had to stop because a buck, a doe and two fawns were crossing the road. At least they were in the crosswalk (true story) If deer want to get in your yard the only way to stop them is a 10 foot fence. Seriously. However you can buy products that you can spray on the plants to make them taste awful to them like Bobbex and that may stop them from nibbling. As for cats try any type of citrus rinds spread around the garden. They absolutely hate the smell. Failing that soak cotton balls with citrus and spread around the garden. Moth balls do not work plus they are poisonous. Or get some bitter lemon spray from a pet store and use that.
