I've been told that "chalk" paint covers imperfections. No sanding or wood filling is necessary. I haven't tried it yet, but a friend of mine has stopped staining all together saying chalk paint is much less work. Then she uses a wax sealer. Good luck.
Sand the table to remove any shine and scratches. Prime with a stain blocking primer, then paint with your color
If the scratches are deep use wood filler, sand and paint.
Sand lightly and use chalk paint color of your choice. 2 coats. 2nd coat, thin the chalk paint a little with a small amount of water then paint. I've done this alot.
