Yes. Do a light sand. Use sponge brushes so you can just toss them out afterwards. I garbage picked a metal table with the glass missing. I painted the metal this awesome green color and inserted a piece of wood in place of the glass. I painted the wood with the chalk paint and it came out great!

PLEASE do your research! Depending on the finish of the piece you are doing... you may or may not need to prime or seal BEFORE painting.
Notorious for bleeding through your paint...... Knots in pine wood.... pretty much anything 'vintage' brown wood... antique mahogany is terrible {bleed through will happen weather it's latex or chalk paint! and always remember that chalk paint doesn't leave a 'smooth' finish & MUST be sealed with polycrylic or wax.
Lightly sand if needed. Wipe off and paint! It is addictive though! I even painted a wall with chalk paint that I mix myself.
