Instead of changing the table, consider it a blank canvas to display a runner with a basket for your remotes, a chunky candle, some books etc. Once you add some decorations the basics of the plain table will become the foundation of your display
I would not stain the piece. Live with it the way it is for now. Once you stain it you may not like that either.I use two placemats to match my decor then added a few fake interesting modern plants and a few knickknacks.

Years ago got a cute hand me down...I used broken tiles on the top. It is my husbands favorite...still!
I would repaint this in chalk paint and then wax it. That will add dinension and interest. Once this piece is styeld with books, baskets and accessories it will be terrific!
Ikea has some good finds but they always need a personal touch! See how I've revamped some furniture below :)
