My living room is also open to the dining room. Both rooms are narrow. My sofa and love seat are also quite large as is the lazy boy chair.
If you are looking for a couch or chair sometimes people sell new items that they never used on craigs list.Often Furniture stores run sales on discontinued seats etc.Items such as lamps, pictures, knickknacks often thrift stores and garage sales would work for that.
We bought all of our furniture second hand!!! I'm a huge fan of craigslist;s ,we even got some gorgeous couches and a coffee table for free! In great condition!
I live in Texas, we have what you call "Beg, Buy, Barter". It's almost like a garage sale on Facebook. People post picture of item for sell and if your luck enough to see it first, you pretty much have first dibs. You can even make offers. If not, then go to your local Goodwill. I stop in every time I'm in town just to see their pictures, nick nacks & picture frames. Sometimes you find some pretty nice things. Great prices!
Craiglist even has a free stuff page
I would go slow for those big ticket items and buy quality hardwood frames and pick your favorite fabric. It will last and you know that you can have it re upolostered in future due to solid frame. It's your place so take time so you can love it. Have a plan and prioritize. Also buy large items in a solid color so you can change pillows and throws out to bring color into space.
