I have been doing this for quite a while and it works perfectly well unless I have an unusually large load. I also cut back on fabric softener down to just a small splash. Works great and laundry smells great but not an overbearing scent.
Just so you know, fabric softer and sheets "can" cause medical problems in people and is toxic to pets. You can google and research it if you are interested. I still use them sometimes but not on sheets and bedding items and not every time I wash towels.
I use a 50/50 vinegar/water mixture with several drops of essential oil of your choice. Lemon and Lavender are nice. Cut up an old tee shirt into squares and then soak them in the mixture in a covered jar. Use one square per dryer load. Return to jar for re-use. I just love the clean fresh smell!
Just use a couple of tennis balls instead. Have done this for years and works just as well and you don't have to worry about the "invisible" build up on your dryer screen that dryer sheets cause.
No, the yellow does not come off on your clothes. I change balls about once a year.

I wash my filter with dish soap, then use brush and lightly scrub the screen and then rinse. You can notice the water runs right through the screen..prevents lint fire.
