You might try a ceiling fan kept on low. A cheap fan will keep the air circulating and dryer. You might have to frebreeze till it dries out. It is very important for circulating the air it keeps down mold which is your musty smell. Clean the walls with bleach if you can. If there are divisions or rooms in the basement you might need more than one fan.
Put a few buckets of Damp Rid which will naturally pull moisture out of the air which is what is causing the odor. With that use a dehumidifier.
Is you basement on the damp side? Spend the money and purchase a small dehumidifier and if possible set it up so you can run the drain hose unto a drain, Then you won't have to go down and dump the bucket ever day or so. I have lake front property and my basement was always wet and musky and of course them smell came up into the house. Once I put the dehumidifier in the basement the smell went away and the basement has been bone dry.
I use DRI-AIR dehumidifier pellets. Easy to use and does a great job!
Yes definitely a dehumidifier, best to wash walls carpet etc down with vinegar and baking soda also sprinkle baking soda on carpet before vacuuming each time. BAKING SODA GETS RID OF SMELLS AND ABSORBS MOISTURE, so place tubes with it in it around your home with rice cus it absorbs moisture as well. Baking soda and vinegar both clean, eat away mold, mildew, bacteria, stains and all types of stinky dingy smells. Also I personally use the combination of the sofa and vinegar in my Washing machine EVERY TIME I was my clothes or fabrics of any type because I had the same problem, but once I washed everything and keep using on laundry and such i haven't had a problem since. FYI DO NOT COMBINE BOTH IN A SPRAY BOTTLE AND when you combine those 2 for the first time be careful the vinegar REACTS BY FOAMING ALOT WHEN MIXED. AT LEAST ITS NOT TOXIC THO hope your situation gets better!! Take Care
You need a dehumidifier, that will take the musty smell away.
vinagar and water got the mold out of my basement. bleach and pets not a good combo. I also keep a small fan running to help exchange the damper basement air with the dryer topside air. the dehumidifier runs 24/7 in the basement. if some thing is smelling musty there is a damp or water issue. in my case, my house sits at the bottom of a hill. water would pool next to the foundation and would soak thru the concrete block walls, puddling in the low spots of the basement floor.
