Coffee Grounds make an excellent wood stain. Check this out. >> http://www.everydayfamily.com/blog/diy-wood-stain-made-with-coffee-grounds/
Artists oils thinned with turp, and or linseed and or varnish. I do a lot of refinishing and make my own stain with oil paint and turp. and sometimes add an oil medium that speeds the drying time. If i want to be finished in one step I mix it with my varnish. Practice helps. And you can mix multiple colors of oils to get the shade you want. Burnt and Raw Umber are the ones I use the most, But the sienna's also work nicely. (add some black, ochre, red, yel, grn, etc for special toning) Practice on a raw piece of junk wood. Borrow from the junk bin at the lumber yard.
