I try to get it done every year to year in a half. You can't tell how bad it looks until you get it cleaned. Of course, if there are rooms that don't get used a lot. I only clean the rooms used daily. The others, not so often.
I agree with the schedule Lttamayo mentioned. However, it should be done every 6 - 12 months if you have pets.
It depends on how tidy you are, how many pets you have and how much traffic is in your home. I live alone, but with 3 dogs, 6 cats, a canary and dragon. Plus the neighbors have 3 dogs next door and we have a gate between our houses that is open most of the time. We also have doggie doors so the pets come and go as they please throughout the day. I have mine cleaned every three months. I would rip out the carpet and replace with wood floors, but we have some senior dogs that would slip and slide too much. We both had to put down runners in our kitchens, neighbors have heated tile floors and I have Pergo. I vacuum every single day and mop the kitchen floor every night before going to bed. Luckily I have a tiny house! Hope this helps.
Most carpet manufacturers recommend that you have the carpet professionally cleaned once a year in order for the warranty not to be voided. As you can see by the other comments there are reasons to have it done either more often or less often if you are not concerned with the warranty, or if the warranty is out of date.
