I'm a huge fan of decoupaged switch plates!! use some of your extra books

Just unscrew the four screws wash the plate cover. If you are wanting to wash the switches themselves shut off the breaker and wash the switches. Don't use tons of water, a damp cloth will work. Put it all back together and reset the breaker

Windex works well and use an old toothbrush on the toggle.

THEN, get everyone to wash their hands more often!

that was going to be my suggestion is to use mr. clean magic erasers. they work wonderfully on plastic, I have revived many of little tykes type toys to near new. They are also fabulous on any grease splatters etc. that you find under your fan hood over the stove too!

These erasers are great not only for the kitchen, but all over the house and I have used them to scrub plastice deck chairs and flower pots.

You can take white switch plates and soak them in water and bleach. Let them sit for a while, looks good as new.

Can't paint until it's clean, right? Earlier posts helpful with cleaning and owner may decide not to proceed with paint.

I bought a switch plate cover. Found a picture that I liked. Try a greeting card. Cut a hole in the card where the switch sticks out. Using clear contact paper, I covered the card with it with an overhang of an inch. Press on to the plate molding it to the back. Cut an X on the hole folding it inwards. Screw to the wall. Update or change them. They can be wiped down.

The surface is easily cleanable and can be sprayed with a cleaner if you want to use one,- otherwise a cloth with hot water and baking soda works well - Once it is clean - decoupage, contact paper or pain all work - depends what you would like to highlight.

Oh yea, you gotta clean it! LOL! You could buy a can of spray paint. Don't even have to mention it to owner...hmmmm

Cleaning your switch plates and door frames should be something you do on a regular basis. You don't need to paint, soak or decoupage them. Just use a warm rag with a drop of dish detergent or spray some window cleaner on a paper towel Or use an antibacterial wipe. Use the same thing you wipe the handles on your refrigerator with.

Oh, please. Take it off the wall and use your dish sponge/cloth and some soap on it. Once it's off you'll be able to see if the switches themselves need to be cleaned, use a damp cloth on those. While the plate is off you can consider if you want to put it back as is, decoupage it, paint it, etc.

Depending on how crafty you are. You can cover it with a decorative design of polymer clay. I make custom ones. All kinds of designs. But you would have to clean it and also sand it down and make the surface very rough. I find thats a great way to add your own style to any room, without having to put holes in the walls. Great for renters.

I was bored one night, ran around my New York apartment and removed all the light switch covers. Wash & dried them and took them to my craft room where I dropped Tim Holtz alcohol inks on the plate cover. They dry instantly and you do not have to put any top coat over them. They have tons of colors, pearls and metallics to add for effect. Seriously, each plate took me about 5 minutes. You just drop and dab, it's that easy. Learn about alcohol inks on YouTube, the posibilites are endless.

Soak it overnight in liquid dishwashing soap or put it in the dishwasher. Clean the rest of the switch with a toothbrush and good detergent (Dawn). The people in your house need to wash their hands more often before they touch things because dirty hands are full of germs. I always keep an old tooth brush which has been soaked in alcohol under my sink for things like this.

A spray cleaner and wipe on, wipe off.

Yes you can paint, decoupage..even do it over with lace..but they still have to be cleaned.
