What are you wrapping? That might help us to give you ideas. If the item(s) fit into a xerox paper or similar size box, I would make a train by attaching a few boxes together and either mod podge the boxes, or paint them. See what you have around your house that may work, boxes, tins, plastic containers.

If he's only five, chances are he won't care what it's wrapped in! Depending on what the gift is, you can do the box within a box within a box, wrapping each one inside the other. As always, a gift bag with lots of scrunched up colored tissue paper is also fun for kids to dig through.

My grandchildren all loved the scavenger hunt for their birthday gift, but they had to take them from small to big.
Use brown kraft paper, like that used for mailing package. Put a ribbon around it and use glue gun to fasten lollipops, gum, or individually wrapped candies to it, making a design, such as spelling his name.
If you use paper, use your fingers to crease each side to make box look better.
