I've always used bleach-water, mild detergent and a toothbrush.
Bleach will work, but it breaks down the grout. If you use bleach, then give your grout a similar bath in water after the bleach. Another, less destructive method would be to make a paste of oxyclean, leaving it on until your grout brightens (it might take quite awhile).
Have you tried "Soft Scrub" it has Clorox in it but not as harsh as bleach alone. Great product
Years ago I had a house cleaning service, a customer had grout that was really nasty. The wide grout lines were full of grease and nasty stuff. I ened up using oven cleaner. Got all done, then resealed the grout. If you don't do that it will end up like a sponge. There is a kit w a roller in it to only seal the grout and keep it off the tile.
