Please share a photo and tell us what you want to do with the room: a bedroom; a guest room; a TV room; a playroom; a crafting room; a big closet? So many choices - what are you thinking?

I would sugget that you choose a personal item that you love to start your decorating project. Use a personal memento that evokes memories of a vacation, loved relative, or nature. That object should inspire a theme or color scheme. I decorated my huge kitchen by starting with a small condiment dish that sat on my grandmothers dining room table every

Sunday. The dish hangs proudly on my new kitchen design.

Every room in my house contains items that remind me to be grateful for my family and life. By using this method, you end up with an original design.

I have one other suggestion. If you have dogs, kids, or messy husbands, put your darker colors on your furniture, rugs on the floors, accents, and accessories. Use lighter colors or neutrals on the walls. It is much easier for a family to live on richer colors in furnishings then neutrals. If you do not have to worry about dirt, you have a choice to do the opposite. You can paint your walls darker colors and go lighter in your furnishings.

If you live in the room, spend the money on durable, comfortable seating. If it is a for looks room, you can get by with cheaper seating. This same theory should be used for end tables, TV cabinets, etc. The less you touch or use a piece of furniture, the less you should pay for it. No one will know what you spent once you have purchashed it. In the design business, the old saying "its not what you see, it's what you think you see" , rules.
