Thanks for the suggestion on the sturdy cat scratcher. My cat is big and regular scratchers don't work for him. I put a piece of old wood (half of a log) on the floor for a long time and he used it. Since I have casual, old country house it worked fine. Now he is 17 and for some reason has changed his mind and is attacking the furniture. The jute mat on the bookcase sounds like something I will try for him.
Thats brilliant!! I was going to buy one for my friend's new kitty, but now I think I'lll DIY one!!!
I made a cat scratcher using a wooden two step ladder and wrapping all the legs with jute and glueing it on. I put carpet on the top and hung steamers and babbles around for her to wack. She loves it and I can use it too when I need a short step up.
I recently made our cats bunk beds from 2 drawers. I think I'll get a jute mat to put on one side as a scratching post and also a was to climb to the top bunk. Here's a picture of it before it was all painted. Naturally our dog had to be in the picture too lol.
