Susan Alkire on Dec 25, 2013Go to PINTEREST and type in stairs, there are so many awesome ideas. One I really like is several of the steps (the back facing you not the step) was painted to look like books, so it looked like a bookshelf.Helpful Reply

Linda Crandall on Dec 25, 2013Sand them down and do a great stencil on them and coat with varnish. Go to Pinterest on our Hello I Live Here Board - I have a tab called "flooring ideas we love" You will get some stencil ideas there. good luckHelpful Reply

Marla Rafuse on Dec 26, 2013You could also paint them if you don't want to stain them and then cover them with a stair runner. I've seen this done and it looks very sharp too. Good luck :)Helpful Reply

Sheryl Hart on Dec 26, 2013I am in the process of removing the glue and sanding after carpet. I will be using a satin porch and floor paint on them. The paint store person suggested satin because it will clean nicely, but is not as slippery as semi-gloss.Helpful Reply

Bonnie Kirschner on Dec 27, 2013I tore out the carpet on my stairs because vacuuming dog hair off carpet is not my idea of fun. I live in a 1907 Victorian that was owned by landlords for 30 years before I bought it in 2006. I don't know what made those previous owners replace the treads, but they used every type of scrap wood.... often varying in thickness. That carpet hid a lot of sins. Some 2x12 Douglas Fir and stain (to match the other floor I refinished in my house) was was economical. July 2006 is when I did those & they are just starting to show wear now.Helpful Reply

Jeanette S on Dec 28, 2013If you are a young person with energy and are able to work hard, the sky is the limit! Or simple painted black on the step part, white or cream on the risers and then stencil numbers or words on the risers!Helpful Reply

Pauliegirl1 on Jul 19, 2015As Jeanette S has said..the sky is the limit!! I personally LOVE what Donna at Funky Junk did, but you can even buy different sayings made of vinyl, or if you have a cricket (sp) cut machine,,make your own, or maybe you have a friend that has one. I bought some on Amazon that were very reasonable!! I have seen them done with scrap paper on the risers, all different, but coordinating colors, or wallpaper samples...LOTS of ideas right here on Hometalk!! Good Luck, be sure to post your finished stairs....Helpful Reply

Jordan Le Bouton on Jul 25, 2015I tore my carpet out of the entire house where there was some. The living room had beautiful dark floors, the stairs I am in hate with. But, I saw where someone put painters tape on either side of an open space and another piece parallel to the side pieces to make a stripe. Then painted stripes black and inside white. Painted risers white and on up. It is beautiful and as soon as I can buy a small sander I will be off and running. I love hometalk so much. Thank you to all you lovely people who share your ideas from one who hasn't a thought in her head but can copy what I like.Helpful Reply
