i would try melamine paint...make sure you wait the complete drying time between coats...try a spot first to see how durable it is but it should work

No! There no paint/finish that will hold up to water contact. Even water resistant paint will peel over time.

William is right..it will peel not long after..even waterproof..especially vertical walls that you cant put a good sealing coat on

There is a paint made for bathroom tiles. I don't see why it wouldn't work. The thing to do would be to lightly sand the melamine. Get the gloss off. Spray on light coats, letting dry properly between coats. A few light coats are better than one or two heavy ones.

yes, you have to use sonmething called Sander Deglosser by KleanStrip. You follow the instructions on the bottle and then you paint over it and put poly Urathene over it to seal it. I did it in my bathroom. I can wash the cabinet and the paint does not rub off.

Thank you all. I will try your suggestion, Carmen. I really don't have the money to tile or reboard that area right now.

I agree, you're going to need to make sure to get paint that is specifically made for showers

Yes you can, first clean the walls with Greased Lightening and hot water using one of the kitchen sponges that has a blue or purple scruffy side. Rinse well, let dry, if you have a vent fan turn it on, a window open it up and I always use a box fan too, leave them all work for about 45 mins. Seconded paint with a primer called Zinsser cover stain (oil base) with stain blocker and bond coat. No sanding needed. You need 2 coats of the primer. By a high quality bath/kitchen paint, I choose Valspar from Lowes, you will need 2 coats of paint also. NOW, the trick to is the dry time. Primer should dry 1 hour between coats, after second coat is applied, allow 24 hrs dry time. Paint should dry 2 hours between coats, after second coat is applied, allow 72 hours dry time. I learned this process from a Master Woodworker, from New York. I've used this process on everything from personal items to Historic Homes thru out the USA. I wish you all the luck and great decorating in your endeavor to change the things you want too! GOD bless.
