It depends what part of the country you live. Heat pumps work great in the south. Heat pumps are no good in the north. Even still, heat pumps and geothermal use electric coils to supplement them for heat......

I think this article can help you out! http://www.climatecontrolcorp.com/geothermal-vs-traditional-units/
I am no expert but thought I would share my experience this winter with the geothermal system in my rental. We had a couple of weeks of below zero temps and frozen pipes in my 100+ year old rental. While there is supplemental heat, even that could not keep up with the cold. The house is pretty well insulated with new windows but the heating ststem just didn't work efficiently and my heat bill was ridiculous. As stated above and by the repairman who came out, midwest winters are not the best climate for these systems.
The geothermal sysytem uses water and when the system is running, for a/c or heat, the water pressure elsewhere in the house is limited. if the heat or a/c kicks on while you are in the shower, it isn't fun. I have to plan laundry, running the dishwasher and showers around the need for heat and a/c.
