Lightly sand the piece down ,clean, stain and seal with a ploycrylic.
Sand the table and remove any dust with a tack cloth. I would paint the legs and give the top a darker wood stain to help cover up those blemishes. A good stain will have a finish incorporated in one step, eliminating the need to give a seal coat.

I would consider putting a baord on top of the stretchers to form a lower shelf. guessing at the size of the table, but suspect an old table leaf would work.
I would lightly sand it and then use the product Watco it is an oil you find at Menards or whatever hardware store you like. It is an oil and stain combo. I used it on my almost 100 year old windows. You just wipe on and then wipe off. I didn't wipe much off cause it just sucked into the wood. A professional wood worker told me about it. Another professional was amazed that is all I used, he had to touch it.
I agree with the other comments. First, make any repairs necessary and then sand the table lightly. Wipe off the table with a slightly damp cloth to remove all of the dust. Let it dry completely and then stain and seal the table. I have used Minwax products with lots of success.
i would chalk paint it and put sanded pallet boards on the top. That is my goal for some glass top tables from the 80's.
I'm a sucker for antiques!! I love sanding and staining, bringing it back to its original look, 100 yrs. ago. It will be beautiful with the wood grain showing once again!! I also would use it as a showpiece, not a coffee table for feet and coffee stains.
If the top is in real bad shape and you have kids that sit in front of the tv and play games,I would put a piece of foam about 3or4" on it,cover with fabric to make a bench.Just an different ideal, itwould be beautiful sanded, stained and poly
