What to do with this? It is still functioning so I can't get rid of it, just need an updated look. Any ideas? Paint? what kind? All ideas appreciated, thanks.

If it is wood, clean it very well to get rid of any grimeaccumulated through the years of usage. Sand it lightly, and then wipe away the dust. Finally paint it a bright color complimentaryto what colors you have in your kitchen. Ask Home Depot about the type of paints available for wood. We have had good result with Rustoleum as itis washable. For extra durability, youcould also apply a coat or two of polyurethane. Enjoy!

@Liliana Wells I agree...use a bold accent color such as red or bright green! A fun color! Tangerine? Purple?

@Tina Schuman I am sorry but I think it's beautiful. but if you want to "update it" I would paint the screen with red " or the color of your kitchen" and paint the edge of the hearts. You could also replace the knobs to change it up alittle

LOL I have one of those too...mine went to the basement last year when we got granite countertops...I decided to declutter but I miss it for storage now

@Carolyn Freeman C Sometimes when we redo, we tend to get rid of things that are practical. You could get yours out and paint every door/drawer a different color...some fun colors...and start using it again. Even take off the old top and put on a top to match your granite! (Or something compatible like a piece of black granite. You can sometimes get something like this cut out of scrap!) We had a piece of teak cut to go on an old Singer sewing machine base to use as a TV stand with ultra-modern Scandinavian platform bed! It is adorable!

If you're still wanting the wire screening for food storage - I'd cut out large rectangles (kinda' like a picture frame) in the drawer fronts to 'get rid' of the 80's hearts and then replace the wire. I'd also cut away/even out the scallop trim along the bottom of the piece.

How about match to kitchen or kitchen decor and add handles that relate to what's inside?

Paint it, stencil on it (potatoes/onions and of course the first thing to do is to clean it well. Let us know how it turns out.

  • Clean it well - that may lighten the color. There are some pretty decals available now. Check on Amazon.
